News Update by Stephanie and May

We have almost finished our Mayan Headdresses in art. In PE we have been creating Mayan dances for our performance. In music, we have been working on the music that we will play. So get ready for a great performance!

We have recently started studying Pennsylvania. You may have noticed from the homework. We have learned the state flower (Mountain Laurel), the state bird (Ruffed Grouse), the state tree (Hemlock) , the state animal (White-Tailed Deer), and the state fish (Brook Trout). We also learned the state nickname: The Keystone State.

The book Mrs. Amoroso is reading to us is called Running Out of Time. It is about a 13 year-old girl named Jessie. She lives in Clifton, a tourist site. She thinks it's 1840 but then she finds out it's really 1996. Ask your daughter to explain it to you.

We had two ladies come from the EPA to see us in science. Their names were Stephanie Branche-Carter and Regina Poeske. They brought us out to the woods and showed us things to do with wetlands. One thing they taught us was that the red color on the soil is rust.

We recently had an assembly with our Springside sisters. We sang songs like Take Me Out to the Ball Game because the Phillies were playing. Almost everyone wore red in support for the Phillies.

News from 4A

Our first meeting with our Springside sisters occurred on Monday, October 6. The fourth graders met their Kindergarten sisters and together they shared books and got to know each other. Our next encounter will be at the end of next week when we get together in the computer lab. Together the girls will explore some favorite games and activities on the computers. In the future, we hope to do some projects together using the Flip video camera.

Every Monday, Mrs. Yaffe comes into our classroom to conduct a discussion with the girls about what non-fiction books they are reading, and the girls get a chance to share what they've journals. Mrs. Yaffe has also been reading aloud short essays about different Presidents from a book called Our White House. Perfect timing with election on the horizon.

We are getting read to end our Everyday Math unit on place value and interpreting data. One activity that took place this week involved the girls measuring their heads to the nearest 1/2 cm. and creating a bar graph with the data. They then had to record the maximum, minimum, range, mode, and median numbers using their graph as a reference. This unit also reviews and reteaches partial-sums addition and partial-differences subtraction. We are also continuing our timed multiplication tests. Please help your daughters practice their multiplication facts.
